Sapphire became especially well-liked in February 1981, when Prince Charles, heir to the British crown, proposed to Lady Diana Spencer (the soon to become Diana, Princess of Wales). Prince Charles made the proposal without a ring, instead choosing to give Diana the chance to think properly about taking up the enviable burden of the glitz, paparazzi, and of course responsibility of being one of the most famous women in the world. Diana agreed, and here comes a historic twist – she chose a sapphire engagement ring instead of the then traditional diamond. She chose a huge oval blue sapphire engagement ring that weighed an amazing 18 karats and was surrounded by 14 small diamonds in a cluster setting. As is expected, the public followed the whole affair with rapt interest, and oval blue sapphire rings became the vogue.
